A Final Song 03:11

about

This originally was going to be an album of solo piano. The inspiration was partly the purchase of my full-sized grand, and the fact that after 40 years as a musician, I am finally starting to understand this instrument.

When Michael Manring agreed to record with me, however, I realized that my instrumental guitar pieces were what I wanted to explore with him. As time continued and my vision clarified, I realized there was a lot of overlap between my piano and guitar pieces, and that recording with Michael was the perfect glue to hold it together.

I've had many stages in my musical life: supporting myself as a drummer, being a keyboardist in a New York City rock band, touring as a singer-songwriter with a guitar which was never in standard tuning and even playing with and recording found-sounds (such as on Shadowlands). But even though this is my 8th full-length album, it's the one that has been the most natural for me because I’ve honored what naturally comes out of me musically.

The album is entitled Playing With Shadows because here, I'm playing with my own shadows: in the past I've had difficulty allowing my innermost musicial tendencies be heard. But by playing with these energies and doing my homework around these beliefs, I'm allowing my musical feelings to be heard. (Weird perhaps, but it makes sense to me somehow…)

My hope is that the sounds of this quiet piano, guitar and/bass, may inspire a few people become more grounded, so that they can feel a deeeper sense of connection with themselves and others. And I hope that in the most positive of ways, you yourself are inspired to play with your own shadows.

Thanks for listening!
David Franklin, 2015, Oakland, CA.

Thanks to Rick and Warren and for great ideas in this process and to Bob Timney for the encouragement.
Special thanks to Nico, Alex and Cecilia, for pressing buttons as I recorded, for great ideas in general and for your love and support.
Very special thanks to Michael Manring for agreeing to record with a mere mortal, such as myself.
